The Duck Dynasty star is finally opening up about his troubled past, and about why he stayed quiet for so long: "It's embarrassing," he said.
Robertson credits his wife for helping him to finally open up about his childhood sexual abuse. Even though he said he now knows his story can help others, the reality TV star admitted it's still difficult to talk about the details.
"It's kind of hard for me," he told E! News in a recent interview. "It's embarrassing and all that, so I didn't do it to get any attention, for sure."
He continued, "I just did it to try to help others who've been through something similar."
Many of the new details are revealed in Robertson's new book, The Good, the Bad, and the Grace of God: What Honesty and Pain Taught Us About Faith, Family, and Forgiveness. In it, Robertson, who is the youngest son of Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, details his abuse, as well as the alcohol abuse and family intervention that followed.
"[Jep's mom] Kay didn't even know all those years that it happened," Robertson's wife, Jessica, said. "We talk a lot with our kids, and we want them to know that no matter, it wasn't their fault, and you can always come to us."
And Robertson also revealed exactly why he kept quiet about his experiences for so many years.
"If you think long enough — and I think I did — that it didn't happen or I'm just never going to think about it again, it will never come back again," he explained. "What's sad is I'd look on Twitter and I saw several comments like 'How could you remember something when you were 6 years old?' This went on for a couple of years. I know exactly what happened. There's no I think or maybe."
