A far cry from Monday's interview about how she maintains her figure, the video shows Beyoncé touring St. Damien Pediatric Hospital during a humanitarian trip for her BeyGOOD foundation in Haiti. The hospital, which provides high-quality medical care to disadvantaged and sick children and is involved with public health and community programs that service more than 90,000 people annually, recently lost funding and was forced to cut staff and the amount of children who can be treated, according to beyonce.com.
The footage follows Beyoncé as she walks the halls of St. Damien, meeting both caregivers and sick babies along the way. We're informed that 150 sick children show up at the facility's gates every morning with hope of receiving life-saving treatment.
Some of the children react positively to Beyoncé's energy and are happy to exchange a high-five or a grin with the celebrity, but some are so sick and despondent that a smile is just too hard to conjure up. Even worse, because of the lack of funding, some children are turned away. "It's heartbreaking sometimes to send children away," a St. Damien representative says. "But many times we have no choice."
Beyoncé, who took the trip back in May, is visibly shaken by the situation at the hospital at many points during the four-minute video. "Doesn't it make you want to cry to see this tiny little thing fighting for her life?" a woman asks Beyoncé as they tour the neonatal preemie unit. You can see the emotion on Beyoncé's face as she nods yes.
Really puts things into perspective, doesn't it? Hopefully this video trends as much as Beyoncé's "big" announcement on GMA that caused so much ruckus or the unPhotoshopped photos of her that leaked and got so much attention at the beginning of 2015.
We live in a culture that's so quick to hop on Twitter to cry foul when a favorite celeb somehow lets us down — Beyoncé's less-than-exciting revelation on Monday, for example — but how many people will make the effort to help raise awareness for this important humanitarian cause? You can help by purchasing one of Beyoncé's BeyGOOD Haiti T-shirts. All proceeds directly aid St. Damien in reopening an abandoned wing and continuing to help the people of Haiti.
