It looks like Rick and the gang is staying put in Alexandria, at least for a little while longer. Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) just became the first new cast addition to The Walking Dead Season 6, and he is playing a key character from the comic book series' Alexandria arc. Hawkins has been cast as Heath, an important member of the Alexandria Safe Zone, who was first introduced in issue 69.
If the show's version of Heath stays true to the character's comic book roots, then Heath will be an Alexandria supply runner who befriends Glenn and is dating another new character, Denise (no casting information on her just yet). The casting of Heath points to a sense of continued stability The Walking Dead has not had for quite some time. Rick and his group have been nomadic since the series began, and their extended stays at the farm in Season 2 and the prison in Seasons 3 and 4 were plagued with walker attacks, Governor attacks and infighting.
The farm arc was also notably one of the show's dullest stretches. Will staying put in Alexandria be a mistake? The Safe Zone offers plenty of new people for the existing characters to interact with, and has set up a story line where Rick's leadership can be questioned. However, staying in one place for too long has never been kind to The Walking Dead.
With any luck, Heath and any other new characters introduced in Season 6 will continue to push The Walking Dead to new heights. In the comics, Alexandria is the longest-running home the characters have, so get ready to settle in, Walking Dead fans — it looks like Virginia will be your home for a while.
