6 Things Judd Apatow might change about Pee-wee Herman

Sarah grew up in Monterey, CA and now lives in Los Angeles. When she's not writing, you can find her enjoying a good book, fine wine, sunflowers and long walks on the beach.

There's not much that could be done to make Pee-wee's Big Adventure anymore awesome than it already is.

The classic movie has everything anyone could ever want: mystery, romance, action, comedy, drama. It's like the best aspects of every genre were all rolled into one fun-filled flick. True, Big Top Pee-wee quenched our Pee-wee full-length feature thirst three years after the eternal man-child's beloved bike was finally found in the first film, but it still left us wanting more.

Talk of Judd Apatow partnering with Paul Reubens to bring Pee-wee Herman back onto the screen and into our hearts has been floating around for a couple years now, leaving loyal fans wondering when, and if, their prayers would finally be answered.

On Tuesday, Netflix officially announced that they will be working with Reubens and Apatow to make Pee-wee's Big Holiday, according to CBS News.

Now that we know that Apatow is producing the next chapter for Pee-wee, what does it mean for the iconic character? Pee-wee's movies are beloved, mostly because they are richly based in fantasy, whereas Apatow's creations are so endearing to audiences because they are largely based on the realities of the human experience. We're still trying to wrap our heads around how the two styles will be united, but we're willing to bet it will be amazing.

Here are six awesome upgrades that only Apatow could bring to the Pee-wee franchise.

1. Crazy fight scenes

We love Pee-wee, however, the guy's got a strong personality, which might account for all the face-offs he encountered during his original big adventure. Technology has come a long way in the 20-plus years since the legendary Tim Burton directed Reubens. Apatow has produced more recent pictures, like Pineapple Express, that utilized this new technology and we can only theorize that it's going to be brought into Pee-wee's Big Holiday.

Pee-wee versus Francis in the bathtub is still one of the most epic battle royales of all time, though. Even with computer advances, it's gonna be hard for Apatow to beat this fight.

2. An epic cast

We all know that Apatow has a crew. Kristen Wiig, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, James Franco and Seth Rogen (just to name a few) all love working him. As babies of the '80s, something tells us that all of these actors are chomping at the bit to get in on the Pee-wee action, to which we say: Bitchin'.

3. Jokes on jokes on jokes

Honestly, this is gonna be an amazing collaboration as far as comedy goes. Reubens, who cowrote Pee-wee's Big Adventure with Phil Hartman and Michael Varhol, is also penning the new movie, so we can expect hilarious one-liners throughout the whole script. Apatow is famous for throwing out strings of one-liners to his stars on set, so things are gonna get good when he gets together with Reubens.

4. Romance

Whether it's flawed romance or a bromance, humans bonding and trying to relate to one another is really what Apatow does best. To that end, is it possible that Pee-wee will have a true partner in crime to take on his holiday? Sure, he's had pals and love interests in the past, but they've never been the center of his universe. He's a loner, Dottie. A rebel.

5. A contemporary soundtrack

Danny Elfman's original score for Pee-wee's Big Adventure is not to be rivaled, but it's likely Apatow will bring more contemporary music to the newest Pee-wee installation. Different, not better, is the key idea here as far as music goes. We wouldn't mind a little "Tequila," though.

6. Some old friends

Apatow loves to throw characters from old movies into his new plots — Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, for instance — so it's not out of the question for him to bring back some people from Pee-wee's heyday. We'd love to see Elizabeth Daily reprise her role as Dottie or Mark Holton come back as Francis. At the very least, Apatow has some awesome cameos he can play with. Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis would be awesome, or how about a road encounter with Large Marge played by Danny McBride, just for shits and giggles?
