Giuliana Rancic makes offensive comment about Zendaya's dreads

James Dinh is a twentysomething full-time music junkie, living in New York City. In his spare time, he enjoys endless debates about pop stars, eating pepperoni pizza and anything that Britney Spears touches. Apart from his work at She Kn...

Giuliana Rancic retracted her statement, but that doesn't make it any less offensive

Giuliana Rancic may be getting a little carried away in the post-Joan Rivers era of E!'s Fashion Police, and her comments regarding Zendaya's dreadlocks prove that point.

Among the many celebrities that Giuliana and company critiqued on the Oscar edition of the hit show was teen starlet Zendaya, but it was the red carpet host's remarks about her dreadlocks that really hit a nerve with folks, including the Disney singer/actress herself. During the segment, Rancic told her cohosts, "I feel like she smells like patchouli oil... or maybe weed."

It's one thing to criticize someone's outfit or hair and it's another thing to drop drug references about them, so when Zendaya got word of Rancic's comments, she went off. In a very lengthy post on social media, Zendaya called her remarks "pure disrespect." "To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or 'weed' is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive," Zendaya wrote. "I don't usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked."

Giuliana got wind of all the backlash and tried to apologize to Zendaya, referencing the star's bohemian-chic look, but it was simply just too little, too late. Word of advice, Giuliana: Try to think before you speak next time.
