8 Ways Pitch Perfect 2 is going to be just like Dodgeball

Julie Sprankles is a freelance writer living in the storied city of Charleston, SC. When she isn't slinging sass for SheKnows, she enjoys watching campy SyFy creature features (Pirahnaconda, anyone?), trolling the internet for dance work...

The Barden Bellas will soon be back on our movie screens in Pitch Perfect 2 and we're totally aca-excited about it — especially since we noticed the sequel's similarities to another one of our most favorite feel-good films: Dodgeball.

1. The lovable bunch of underdogs

Understandably, not many people were beating down the audition doors to be a Barden Bella after Aubrey upchucked all over the stage at nationals. The resulting group of girls who made the cut may be ragtag but, gosh darn it, they're adorable.

The members of Average Joe's gym are, well, average. But even if their muscles are minuscule, their hearts are big — and that's what really counts, right?

2. The comically pumped-up competitors

In the first film, the Bellas' biggest competition was another on-campus group, the Treblemakers. In the sequel, though, they're forced to square off against the sleeveless-shirt-wearing Eurobots better known as "Sound Machine." Yikes.

Oh, who could possibly forget the Purple Cobras? White Goodman's mustache alone haunts our dreams. And their shirts may not be sleeveless, but you've gotta admit these guys bear an uncanny resemblance to PP2's Sound Machine.

3. Two hilarious and often off-color commentators

Could there be a Pitch Perfect world without John Smith and Gail as commentators? It's like asking, "If a tree falls in the wood and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" No one knows... and no one really cares. These two are everything.

Three words: "Effin A, Cotton!" Effin' A, indeed. (By the way: Jason Bateman at his best!)

4. An intimidating European chick with, uh, strong eyebrows

We don't know much about the extremely tall and intimidating blond European chick in Pitch Perfect 2 yet, aside from the fact that she speaks, like, eight languages and "loser" isn't one of them.

Fran's dodgeball skills were unparalleled... as were her eyebrows. Still, this Frida Kahlo look-alike totally won us over by Dodgeball's end and we couldn't help rooting for her and Owen to make a lasting love connection and make lots of unibrowed babies.

5. Team bonding

They worked their way through a few growing pains along the way but, like the Joes, the Bellas overcame their differences to become a super tight-knit group. Judging from this latest clip, part of their pre-competition ritual now includes a rousing pillow fight.

I mean, it's kind of like a pillow fight. You know, with wrenches.

6. An unfortunate wardrobe issue

In what promises to be one of the most hysterical moments of Pitch Perfect 2, a set disaster leads to a major wardrobe malfunction for Fat Amy. Let's just say going commando was an unfortunate choice.

The Joes suffered through a wardrobe setback of their own. While Owen's intentions in designing the team's new uniforms were pure, the shipping mix-up that ensued was... um, impure.

7. Killer comebacks

We can't wait to see what situation led to Beca dropping this line about World War II. Right? How do you even come back from that?

C'mon. Some of the best one-liners in recent cinematic history may quite possibly be traced to White Goodman. His well-timed use of the term "touché" is classic, yes, but nothing beats "nobody makes me bleed my own blood!"

8. A team member with an identity disorder

We love Fat Amy. You love Fat Amy. Everyone loves Fat Amy. Only her name is really Patricia. Methinks someone could use a sit-down sesh with a good therapist.

Arrrrrrr! The world would have been a much less sunny place had Steve the Pirate stuck with the decision to turn his back on his pirate heart. But, yeah, maybe he and Fat Amy, er, Patricia should hook up for a joint therapy sesh to sort out their identity disorders.
