The Scandal actress' skin appears to be much lighter on the cover, and this has sparked outrage over Photoshopping and race in the media, with many fans taking to social media to express their disappointment.
Among the angry Twitter users was rapper Angel Haze, who said she really hates the cover.
i really hate the kerry washington in style cover. y take one of the only brown women doing major things and make her white?— angxl hxze (@AngelHaze) February 6, 2015
Other fans also let their feelings be known.
Why InStyle got Kerry Washington lookin' like Stacey Dash? That ain't right. Someone's Photoshop needs to be confiscated.— Sean P of C.Spaniels (@seanpadilla) February 5, 2015
WTF did InStyle Magazine do to Kerry Washington. Woman is BEAUTIFUL. That photoshop job is so many wrong things. pic.twitter.com/p0P5VFRBFZ— Amy Pfister (@amy_pfister) February 5, 2015
However, Washington is one person who is "thrilled" with the cover, which she happily shared with fans on Instagram earlier this week.
Although, the comments on the picture are less positive, with one fan writing, "I'm such a fan of yours @kerrywashington! However, this photo for the cover is awful! You're a gorgeous woman! You have the most beautiful complexion! Why did they make you look so pale? I didn't even believe this was you. Photoshop and editing gone completely wrong! @instylemagazine."
Reacting to the backlash, InStyle decided to post a message about the cover and address the claims that the actress' skin had been lightened.
"While we did not digitally lighten Kerry's skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern," the magazine wrote. "We understand that this has resulted in disappointment and hurt. We are listening, and the feedback has been valuable. We are committed to ensuring that this experience has a positive influence on the ways in which we present all women going forward."
Washington retweeted the link to the statement, calling it a "beautiful statement" and agreeing that it is an important conversation that needs to be discussed.
