5 Ways Melissa McCarthy’s new movie Spy is just like the rest

Tiffany Antone is a playwright and instructor, who also finds time to produce and direct new and innovative works. Her plays have been read/produced in NY, LA, DC and AZ, and she is the creative mind behind Little Black Dress INK — a fem...

Is it just us, or have we seen these McCarthy moves before?

Melissa McCarthy's latest film has her playing a mousy, sarcastic analyst who surprises everyone with her hidden (and unexpectedly superior) ball-busting moves... which leaves us scratching our heads and asking "Haven't we seen this already?"

Perhaps it's the fact that McCarthy has teamed up with writer/director Paul Feig again — and who can blame her? The two have seen outrageous success with past collaborations, breaking the mold with both Bridesmaids and The Heat. On this, their third film together, however, we can't help but notice that the tropes feel a little tired, and the Melissa McCarthy sparkle is feeling a bit recycled.

McCarthy is a comic genius, so why do we keep seeing her in the same underdog-who-comes-out-on-top scenario? She's a sharp-talking plain Jane who winds up saving the day, again, and again and again... and if Feig casts her in his upcoming Ghostbusters remake, it's a role we'll no doubt be seeing again soon.

Don't believe us? Check out the proof below.

1. Multiple identities

In Spy, McCarthy plays a CIA analyst who, bored with her humdrum role behind the scenes, volunteers for a secret mission. As a spy, she takes on secret identities in the hopes of locating a nuclear weapon. As such, she dons at least three different wigs in the trailer alone. But secret identities aren't new ground for McCarthy.

In Identity Thief, McCarthy played a con woman so conflicted about her youth as a foster child that she had about a thousand different identities. The only difference we can see is that this time Jason Bateman won't be cramping her style as she dodges bullets with the superspy elites.

2. Throwing things at people's heads

Listen, we agree that watching someone get beaned in a comedy is almost always foolproof, but why does McCarthy seem to do it so often? In the scene pictured above, she's throwing her gun at someone's head — presumably because she's out of bullets.

Here she is literally throwing the book at someone in The Heat.

And again, letting her manager have it in Tammy. We're not saying it's no longer funny, we're just saying there might be other ways to make us laugh as well.

3. Catfights

McCarthy has got some killer comedy chops, which probably explains her killer instincts on how to turn a clumsy fight scene into a laugh riot. Her couch attack on Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids was the perfect antidote to Wiig's character's über-depression, but after watching McCarthy wrestle with Sandra Bullock in The Heat and make numerous slap shots to Bateman's throat in Identity Thief, we're ready for something new.

It was surprising in Bridesmaids. Now it's practically a McCarthy movie given.

4. Snarky intimidation

In Spy, McCarthy dresses down a confused-looking fellow with the following words of warning: "I'm the person who's going to cut your dick off and glue it to your forehead so you look like a limp-dick unicorn. That's who the f*** I am."

It's a funny line, and one that will, no doubt, elicit some hearty laughs. But it feels familiar.

It feels familiar because it's a trope McCarthy plays well. Here she is in The Heat telling a coworker, "I'm gonna make you bend over, and I'm going to reach up into your pocket and I'm going to get the keys to your house, and then I'm going to drive there and stab you with your own badge. That's what I'm going to do."

The effect is that you laugh at the situation, but also realize that McCarthy means business. But I think we can get behind our tough leading lady without seeing her do this in every movie.

5. Freaking out in a car

There are, as you can see, a number of similarities between her recent films, but perhaps our biggest question of all is, "Why is McCarthy freaking out in a car in every single movie?" Seriously. Just look at the proof.

Here she is headbanging in Tammy. Which was, in all fairness, a road-trip movie involving all sorts of vehicular shenanigans.

And again, car-dancing in Identity Thief, another road-trip buddy comedy.

Who can forget the evil laughter on display as she hunts down perps in The Heat?

In Bridesmaids, she puts her travel charms to use on a plane instead of in a car, but we still think it counts.

Look, we're not saying we're tired of McCarthy's biting sarcasm or growing weary of her penchant for physical comedy. We love this hilarious and talented woman. But we are asking to see her do something new, something different. After all, we're pretty sure this super-talented actress has more than these same familiar tricks up her sleeve.
