The same movie studio who over the course of the last few weeks has been (rightfully) slammed for their insensitive and rather racists remarks about overseas audiences, President Obama and Kevin Hart, among others, is now thinking about making the next James Bond a black man. Luther's Idris Elba, to be exact. And we are having trouble containing our giddy little girl smiles.
It is pretty widely known that the current 007 has been trying to get out of his superspy gig for several years now. Daniel Craig said in a 2012 Rolling Stone interview, "I've been trying to get out of this from the very moment I got into it. But they won't let me go, and I've agreed to do a couple more, but let's see how this one does because business is business and if the shit goes down, I've got a contract that somebody will happily wipe their ass with."
Craig will at least be included in the upcoming Bond flick Spectre
, which is being filmed right now and is scheduled to hit theaters in November of 2015.
But thanks so the Sony hackers (if we can say thank you for anything) we now have some insider information about the upcoming action-packed Bond film. According to multiple reports, parts of the movie's script has been leaked and the budget has also been reported to have hit somewhere in the neighborhood of a whopping $300 million.
According to numerous reports, in a message to former executive VP at Columbia Pictures, Elizabeth Cantillon, Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal said, "Idris should be the next Bond." Giddy little girl smiles again.
We for one would love to see the beautiful Elba on the big screen slow-walking away from an explosion and getting into an Aston Martin.
But not everyone feels that way. And by not everyone, we mean old racist white radio pundits. Rush Limbaugh doesn't think Elba can or should be the next Bond, because he's not white.
"James Bond is a total concept put together by [author] Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was. But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland," he said. "But that's not who James Bond is, and I know it's racist to probably point that out."
Yes. Yes it is.
James Bond is a character. He can be whoever anyone wants him to be. And we've got news for you, Rush: Craig isn't a Scot either. But his skin color has the correct amount of melanin in it, so he's OK?
Get over yourself, dude.
The rest of the world (or maybe just the female part of the world) would love to see that beautiful man play James Bond. Here's hoping these rumors stick.
