We're sad Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy are over, but there were a few signs along the way

Kate Hudson is back on the market.

The Almost Famous actress and her rocker fiancé, Matt Bellamy, consciously uncoupled quite a while ago and have now officially called off their engagement, according to People magazine.

"Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now," Hudson's rep told People. "Despite this, they remain very close friends and committed co-parents." Hudson and Bellamy, who is the front man for Muse, have one child together, a son named Bingham Hawn Bellamy.

It's a sad situation, especially since they have a kid together, but the split announcement doesn't come as a total surprise. Speculation about Bellamy and Hudson's relationship status has been swirling all year.

Rumors that the couple was on the rocks started surfacing early on in 2014. "They realize they are in different places in their lives, they grew apart," an insider told Us Weekly in February. "It's not good right now. They're taking time apart to try and make things work," another source said.

The fact that Bellamy and Hudson began dating in 2010 and have been engaged since 2011 didn't help fend off speculators, either. Many began to wonder if the couple would ever make the walk down the aisle. "I think until the day we get married, the answer is going to be, 'We have no intention right now of getting married.' And then you find out we got married," Hudson told USA Today in 2012.

Hudson also tried to squelch gossip about her prolonged engagement and possible breakup by referencing her mother's relationship with long-time partner, Kurt Russell, whom Hudson considers to be her father. "My parents aren't married," Hudson told People in September. "And one of the reasons they never got married is because they have been married before and they liked it the way it was. They didn't feel like they needed a piece of paper to be committed. So for me I know that marriage is not a golden ticket."
