Part of being a good father is finding a way to balance being someone your children love and admire with being someone who sets rules and expectations. We don't always catch Chrisley at his best, but we always see him prevail as a loving parent. He admits that having cameras rolling can be a bit of a challenge, especially for the kids.
"I think that first season, it was new, it was fun. You know, we love the people we work with: our camera crew and our sound folks and our producers. So, we've got a great group of people," Chrisley explained. "But, then, second season rolls along and you start feeling like, 'I need five minutes. I need to do this.' But, I tell the kids, 'Sorry. That's not what you signed up for. You signed up for this. You have a contract that says you're going to do A, B and C and you need to honor your contract.'"
How does he explain his rationale behind not letting his kids walk away from their television commitment? Pretty easily, actually.
"Here's the thing I've taught my children long before there was a television show: To whom much is given, much is required," Chrisley told us. "So, we opened the door for people to come into our lives. And people are going to take from that what they need to make them feel better about themselves for that day."
Opening your life to the public can make for some pretty sticky situations. When rumors fly or someone has a bad day during an interview, everyone begins grasping for the "truth" behind the cameras. Chrisley says he's not bothered by the rumors or bad press, though. He shared, "My children and myself personally know that you can't introduce us to who we are. We know who we are. I've been me for 46 years, so you don't have a surprise for me."
He also has a real Southern way of dealing with the gossip columnists spreading those rumors and trumping up the facts. It's more forgiving than you might expect from the always-outspoken father of five.
"You know, Todd Chrisley takes one of his children and locks them in a car for nine days because they can't drive properly: That's gonna sell," Chrisley said. "But, you know, Todd Chrisley sitting down with his daughter and explaining why he's taking the car from you, because I no longer feel that it's safe for you to be on the highway and we need to retool and regroup and get you back where you need to be: That doesn't sell. So, we're very aware of, right now, for these five minutes that we're relevant, people want to attach themselves to our names because those who haven't had that relevancy, they want to use our name to get there. So, if we help you get there and you tell a lie about us and it helps to put you in a different position, God bless you."
We had one of our longest chats yet when Todd Chrisley came by SheKnows' studio. To listen to him dote on his lovely wife, Julie, and share insight into the family's social media statistics, as well as learn the most important advice his mama gave him, make sure to watch the full interview above.
