She's not just the newbie that everyone is either trying to look out for on missions or training to be an agent. Now that she's a full-fledged agent, she's grown even more confident than before. Plus, there's the added mystery of everything that is happening with her father.
The addition of new teammates has added to the fun this season. Hunter is brilliantly hilarious, but his story grew infinitely more interesting when it was revealed that he and Bobbi were once married. Bobbi herself brings another dynamic to the show, as she is supposed to become Mockingbird at some point.
Nothing was more heartbreaking at the beginning of this season than to get to the end of the premiere and realize that Fitz and Simmons weren't actually together. Fitz's addled brain had created a Simmons he could talk to since the real one was gone. Ever since that moment, their relationship has become more complicated and more intriguing — even after Simmons returned.
Coulson has always been cool, but if it's possible, he's gotten even cooler this season. He's not just a cog in the wheel that is S.H.I.E.L.D., he's running the show. He's also got this weird alien writing project he's doing on the side with May's help. No one knows exactly what it means yet, but it's bound to be awesome.
Last season, I have to admit, I grew weary of the comings and goings of the Avengers characters. Seriously, after a while, it started to feel like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only existed as a way for ABC and Marvel to trot out their latest movies. I felt like I wasn't watching a TV show so much as a commercial and I didn't like it. This season, the series feels like its own entity and I've been able to get into the story much easier now that I don't feel obliged to go see a new film every couple months to keep up.
I really have to tip my hat to this show for going in a completely unexpected direction with this character. When it was revealed last season that Ward was working for Hydra, it could easily have been turned into a "Gotcha!" moment where they turned around and said he was a spy working both sides. Instead, Ward was captured and held prisoner. He's never denied what he's done, but he also seems very willing to make up for his mistakes and start working for the good guys again. Yet, I feel as though we can't trust him. It's that feeling of uncertainty that I find exciting about him this season.
