You're the Worst is the dating story of Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere), two unfathomably likable people who never meant to fall in love but... kind of are. Gretch is a stubborn, seemingly directionless, but ultimately nice girl who works in the entertainment industry and knows everyone is basically just looking out for themselves. Jimmy, a writer, is equally directionless, entirely aloof to others' feelings and a bit neurotic. What they have in common is their shared cynicism and desire to keep love at a distance.
They meet at a wedding. Gretchen is taking home one of the presents. Jimmy just tried and nearly ruined the reception, thanks to leftover feelings and bitterness for the bride. They were meant to go their separate ways. Instead, they found themselves in bed together. (Which made for some of the funniest, sexiest sex scenes ever seen on television.) And then they made the "mistake" of talking. We knew from the first episode that Gretch and Jimmy were meant to be.
What's particularly refreshing is that it seemed as if they each seemed to recognize their destiny, too. You're the Worst isn't a story about a boy chasing a girl. It's also not a story centered around one woman's long roster of boyfriends. Instead, it feels like the story of two people who know they're meant to be... but just can't get their shit together. Jimmy continually trips over his aloofness and Gretchen constantly gives in to the doubt she has about relationships, love and Jimmy. But we know, just know, they will make it. Somehow. Because these two assholes with their various issues? They deserve each other.
Gretch and Jimmy are balanced by a pair of two hilarious best friends. Jimmy's roommate, Edgar (Desmin Borges) is a funny, well-meaning veteran who Jimmy seems to love but just barely tolerates. Gretch's best friend is the newly married and ultimately unhappy Lindsay (Kether Donohue). Edgar and Lindz drag their friends on some interesting adventures separately. Together, though, the way they bounce off each other is extraordinary. We're not sure we're supposed to root for Lindsay to leave her husband and tackle Edgar and yet we do. They're the worst. But, maybe we are, too.
