BuzzFeed reported Tuesday that Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring and a dozen other Veronica Mars alums will co-star in the upcoming spinoff web series,Play It Again, Dick.
The series, announced in January, revolves around Veronica Mars character, Dick Casablancas. In the series, Hansen has "written" a fictional Veronica Mars spinoff designed to make him a star. It's super meta — most of the actors play their Veronica Mars characters, as well as the actors who have begrudgingly agreed to reprise their roles at Hansen's urging.
"The web series will have more in common with Party Down tonally, but it will be about Ryan Hansen, or at least a version of Ryan Hansen, deciding to capitalize on the current Veronica Mars heat to get his own series on the air," creator Rob Thomas told BuzzFeed. "He'll try to pull his actor pals into the venture with varying degrees of success."
Thomas has been tight-lipped about the project since it was initially announced, but now that filming has wrapped on the eight-episode series, he's ready to talk.
Ryan Hansen will play a fictionalized version of himself, as well as Dick Casablancas. He'll be joined by Kristen Bell as herself and Veronica Mars, Jason Dohring as himself and Logan Echolls, Enrico Colantoni as himself and Keith Mars, Percy Daggs III as himself and Wallace Fennel, and Daran Norris as himself and Cliff McCormack.
Francis Capra is back as himself and Eli "Weevil" Navarro, along with Kyle Gallner as himself and Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas, and Christopher B. Duncan as himself and Clarence Wiedman.
Ryan Devlin, who played rapist Mercer Hayes in the third season, will play himself and Duncan Kane, replacing Teddy Dunn as Veronica's paramour in the original series.
Chris Lowell and Ken Marino are returning, but only to play themselves, and Amanda Noret will reprise her role as Madison Sinclair, but not as herself. Likewise, Lisa Thornhill is back, but only to play Celeste Kane.
Still following? If not, you're not alone; the show within a show seems crazy complicated.
Play It Again, Dick also includes a handful of new faces: Robert Buckley, Rose McIver, Wesley Chan, Philip Wang, and Chris Dinh, as well as Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, and Thom Sherman, The CW’s head of development.
Play It Again, Dick premieres the week of Sept. 15 on CW Seed. Here's hoping the show is easier to follow than the cast list.
