It's all over: Professional golfer Rory McIlroy has decided to end his relationship with Caroline Wozniacki as their wedding day fast approached.
According to Us Weekly, the 25-year-old golfing champ released a statement on Wednesday, May 21, revealing that he was calling off his engagement to the Danish beauty.
"The problem is mine," McIlroy confessed. "The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."
The couple appeared to be so happy and their future together looked to be bright after the loved-up pair became engaged during a romantic proposal on New Year's Eve in Sydney, Australia. However, their romance was clearly not to be.
McIlroy addressed his breakup once again when he spoke to reporters at Wentworth Golf Club, and according to ESPN, he revealed the split was a mutual decision with Wozniacki also opting to move on with her life.
"It is quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself, and the statement really said it all this morning. It was mutual, and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I've said all that I need to say."
"Look, I'm no different than anyone else," McIlroy added. "Everyone has been through breakups, and it's obviously very, very difficult. But look, I'm here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that's what I'm going to do."
As for Wozniacki, she has also spoken out via Twitter, where she addressed the split and thanked fans for all their support.
"It's a hard time for me right now. Thanks for all the sweet messages!Happy I support Liverpool right now because I know I'll never walk alone," the blond beauty wrote.
