Smith Takes The Blame
Sky Ferreira and DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith seemed like the perfect indie couple, but things may not be as they seem. The two were arrested over the weekend for drugs among many other things.
Indie darlings Sky Ferreira and Zachary Cole Smith were arrested together Saturday morning in Saugerties, New York and ended up in jail on drug charges. The couple was pulled over just after midnight after police said the driver made "several vehicle and traffic infractions," according to the Daily Freeman.
And things only got worse from there.
When police ran a check on the 1990 Ford truck the couple was in, they found the plates were stolen and Smith was wanted in another county for numerous traffic violations. The police report said that, after a search, they found heroin on Smith and ecstasy on Ferreira.
Ferreira, who is also a model and actress, and has become something of a fashion icon, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. Smith, leadsinger of DIIV, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of stolen property and one count of aggravated unlicensed driving. According to the Daily Freeman, Smith was also charged with the violations of unregistered motor vehicle, driving without insurance, being an unlicensed driver and having an inadequate exhaust system.
Smith and Ferreira was taken to the Ulster County Jail, but later bailed out. He performed with DIIV Saturday night at the Basilica SoundScape, a music festival in upstate New York.
Smith tweeted from his band's page Monday morning about the case, and reminded fans he hasn't been convicted of a crime.
Although Ferreira already had a successful career as a model, both musicians rose in the indie scene very quickly and may have found a kinship with each other. But they're also both very young. Ferreira told Billboard back in July that just because she has fun doesn't mean she has a problem.
"I'm not a saint, but I'm also 21 years old," the singer said. "Yeah, I do go out, but I'm not a drug addict by any means, because you can't do this [performing] if you're a drug addict. If I was a drug addict, there would already be a ton of s*** out there showing that I was a drug addict, you know? I would be behaving like one. I think it's partially who I hang out with, the way I look and the way I dress."
Ferreira is supposed to kick off a fall tour opening for Vampire Weekend this Thursday. Her album, Night Time, My Time is due out Oct. 29.
