She Stays Mum On Johnny Depp

Amber Heard moved to the big city to escape normalcy, and she will never regret anything about where her life has led her.

Amber Heard
may be the object of affection of one of the most wanted men in the world, but it wasn’t long ago that the actress was in a serious relationship with a woman. Heard sat down with Elle magazine about being bisexual, but wouldn’t say anything about her relationship with Johnny Depp.

"I didn't want to look like I was hiding anything," she said about coming out publicly in 2010. "I'm not, and wasn't ever, ashamed."

Heard dated photographer Tasya van Ree from 2008 to 2012, but presumably met Depp when they starred together in The Rum Diary in 2011 (he split from his wife Vanessa Paradis in 2012).

Heard dropped out of Catholic high school at the age of 17 to move to New York, saying she "was hungry for stimulation."

“I wanted to see new things and learn everything I could,” she explained.

That hunger led her to a successful career as a model, and later as an actress. The path that led her to New York is the same reason she isn’t yet thinking of things like marriage and kids.

"I don't imagine myself, my work, or my life fitting into any kind of standardized path," she told Elle, the closest she came to talking about her relationship with Depp. "In fact, the idea of there even being a standard freaks me out a lot."

The 27-year-old stars next in Paranoia, alongside Liam Hemsworth, Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman, and explained the character fits into what she wants to portray to the world.

"I try to play characters who are somehow empowered or strong," Heard said. "People want to put me in a wedding dress and make me the object of affection, but I'd much rather shoot the gun and save the world. I've always fought against what was expected of me as much as I could."

Paranoia is out in theaters Friday, Aug. 16.
