Kerry Washington's career is on an upswing. The actress was recently nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her performance on the insanely popular Scandal. The ABC drama hit new heights last season and has taken Washington's profile with it.
Washington isn't just a small screen darling, she also dominates film. Last year, she starred in the Oscar-nominated Django Unchained opposite Jamie Foxx. Despite her blockbuster success, she remains grounded.
The actress tells EW how she keeps her head out of the clouds.
“The big decision I made in the last two years was to make sure I put my own mental health and wellness very high on the list of priorities,” she said. “The truth is, I just don’t think it’s ever about one decision. I think making a commitment to try to make good decisions on a regular basis is probably the best decision I could have made.”
Washington knows that the industry is fickle. You can be here today, gone tomorrow. She's adopted an outlook that allows her to accept the good with the bad.
“You don’t ever have a roller-coaster ride that only goes up. It’s about enjoying the ups and the downs, and in the end, trusting the ride. The ride is going to be what it’s supposed to be, and it’s going to be a blast.”
The actress is currently working on Scandal's third season, while basking in the glow of newly-wedded bliss. We could all take notes from Washington. Hard work eventually pays off and when it does, be sure to savor the moment.
