Will.I.Am Goes Gatsby In “Bang Bang”
will.i.am goes back to the age of flappers and moonshine in the new video for his song off The Great Gatsby soundtrack, "Bang Bang."
We're used to seeing will.i.am in some futuristic getups. I'm sure his closet is full of chrome and pleather (that's what we'll be wearing in the future, right?).
He’s even an astronaut in Ke$ha’s new video, but now he's going back in time with the new video for his single “Bang Bang.”
The track is both off his album #willpower and the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby.
will.i.am goes back — way back — to the 1920s with the melody from the 1925 song, “The Charleston” mixed with rap and hip-hop beats.
Quite dapper in his tux complete with white gloves, top hat and tails, will.i.am performs in front of a big band who also happen to be his backup dancers — seemingly in Jay Gatsby’s foyer.
Everything is black and white in “Bang Bang.” All of the footage of will.i.am and the film clips have been given a scratchy grain treatment reminiscent of very old film strip — a great touch for that old-time feel.
We also get a glimpse of will.i.am’s considerable tap-dancing skills. Who knew he was so multifaceted?
Granted, the song itself is nothing stellar — will.i.am has never been known for his lyrical prowess.
“Stupid is what stupid do / Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo.”
With a ridiculous line like that, we might as well be listening to LFO’s "Summer Girls."
While will.i.am’s not known for his lyrics — and with all of the samples he uses, he’s certainly not known for writing his own music — he sure produces some pretty catchy songs, and “Bang Bang” is one of the catchiest.
