Today's ambitious Capricorn Moon motivates us to get busy, but we may feel as if our timing is slightly off as the Moon forms an uneasy quincunx with energetic Mars in showy Leo. Luckily, the discomfort is temporary, for the Moon's supportive sextile with charming Venus helps to smooth out ruffled feathers. It's possible to take a leap of faith and move beyond practical restrictions as clever Mercury forms a creative quintile with expansive Jupiter.

Tarot card of the day

The Empress
Traditionally entitled "Empress," this major arcana or "trump" card portrays the energy of the Great Mother. She is Nature, around us but also within us, the ever-unfolding Source of life-giving power. She is often pictured as a pre-Christian Goddess, as the one whom the High Priestess is channeling down to earth for the rest of us.

In medieval Europe, the Empress card was painted to represent whatever Queen currently ruled the land, probably to satisfy the Inquisitors. But the scholars of the Renaissance and beyond had no doubt of her true identity, although she could not be fully revealed on Tarot cards as the "woman clothed with the sun" until after the French Revolution.

This supreme archetype of femininity also symbolizes fertility. It is She who provides us nourishment and security. She is also sometimes seen as delighting us with flowers and fruit. A potentially terrifying aspect of this archetype manifests itself whenever karmic mood swings wipe out our plans, like a storm that has come upon us. Whatever happens, the Empress is the Source of our Embodiment and of Natural Law. She might even be called "the Great Recycler."

Transformation Sparks Hope

A power struggle could arise early this month with the Full Moon in Taurus on November 2. This lunation occurs in the placid sign of Taurus, normally making this one of the less dramatic Full Moons on the year. However, this time around aggressive Mars in proud Leo forms challenging 90-degree squares to the Sun and Moon that provoke conflict and competition. It's tempting to fight with those closest to us to wrestle with the confusion that intimacy inspires. While reason is counseled, it may be difficult for emotions to settle very quickly.

The passion of the Sun in Scorpio deepens when Venus enters this sign on November 7. Feelings deepen and relationships grow more complex with the love planet in enticing Scorpio. Desires grow stronger, but jealousy and enmity can stir feelings of revenge. Clearly, getting even is no way to get ahead, because the wounds of romantic disappointment are only healed with more love.

Emotional reactions are stirred by one of the strongest planetary patterns in Astrology when stern Saturn crosses swords with potent Pluto on November 15. This marks the middle of the month as a time when we resist authority and desire to tear down walls. Of course, if you're the one maintaining order and acting responsibly, you might feel like the world is working against you. The point, though, is not to blindly resist change but to slowly facilitate it where it's needed. Negotiations can help to untangle knots and reestablish harmony but may be a long, arduous process. So, if you're not fully committed to keeping a threatened job, relationship or precious object, it's better to yield gracefully now and move on. Saturn square Pluto, which may threaten institutions and collective safety, will reoccur in late January and August 2010 as part of a long-term reordering of priorities.

Still, recognizing what needs to go makes room for new people and experiences to enter our lives. Mental Mercury moves into visionary Sagittarius on November 15, offering hopeful glimpses of the future that make the hard work of the here and now worthwhile.

On November 16 the New Moon in Scorpio receives a supportive 120-degree trine from inventive Uranus, revealing unexpected ways to turn losses into gains. Dreamy Neptune's tense square to this Sun-Moon conjunction, though, is a reminder to forgive others and ourselves without losing sight of the small details that really count.

Forgiveness comes more easily with the Sun's entry into generous Sagittarius on November 21. In the U.S. we celebrate Thanksgiving on the first Jupiter day (Thursday) in Sagittarius, an appropriate expression of this bountiful planet and sign. Sagittarius invites us to aim higher and find inspiration that carries us to another level of awareness and experience. The struggle for survival that many face is made easier when we connect with truths and beliefs that take us beyond the limits of our everyday lives. Dreaming about bigger and better things may be an irresponsible escape for some, but for most of us it can provide the spark of hope needed for desirable change....
