I want to make pretty things and people happy, not necessarily in that order. I’m a chronic overachiever + a little fish in the big sea.
When I was 18 years old, I fell in love with two careers: journalism and hairstyling. I made the decision to enroll in two schools, not knowing at the time exactly what I was getting myself into. I attended regular college and cosmetology school at the same time, eventually working at a salon in San Diego while continuing my pursuit of travel journalism. In 2011, I packed my bags and transferred to The New School University in New York City.
I graduated with my bachelor’s in 2013, and at that point, getting a “regular” 9-5 job would have meant giving up one of my two passions. It was at that point that I made the decision to jump headfirst into a freelance and entrepreneurial career.
Today, I work as both a hairstylist and journalist.
In regards to journalism, I work as a content creator to produce digital media to help companies amp up their online presence. I’m passionate about working with non-profits doing volunteer work abroad, especially in countries we hear less about in the mainstream media. I’m interested in learning about peoples’ lives and “normalcy” in different cultures -- I think everyone has a story, and as a journalist, I’m lucky enough to be able to share it. I’ve visited 20+ countries in an effort to document cultures through writing, photography, video and design. Not everyone has the luxury of travel, but media is a way to share cultures and learn from one another.
At the same time, I work as a hairstylist on the set of photoshoots as well as in the salon, maintaining a regular clientele on both coasts. I believe hair should be healthy, beautiful and easy to maintain. I believe in creating a unique style that fits your needs. My goal is to teach my clients how & why products/chemicals react the way they do as well as how to recreate salon looks at home. I believe little things can make a big difference in how you feel about yourself: You’re already beautiful on the inside, so let’s make sure you feel that way on the outside.
Ultimately, journalism and hairstyling both allow me to express my creative talents and vision. But perhaps, more importantly, the two paths are not only my art, they’re also a way for me to help others and bring a smile to their faces.
