Here's a treat for the weekend: a great new video from Canadian band Walk Off the Earth about a transgender girl learning to be herself.
The video, "Alright," is from their June album Sing It All Away. The band told Mashable that Ellie, the eight-year-old star of the piece, "is actually a friend of the band" and they hope "her story resonates with people the same way it did with us."
It's been a great year for LGBTQ-inclusive kids' music--although Sing It All Away isn't really a kids' album per se. More kid-specific and inclusive albums this year include:
- Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer’s Dancin' In The Kitchen: Songs For All Families (my review here)
- Chana Rothman’s Rainbow Train (my review here)
- Grammy-nominated Alistair Moock’s All Kinds of You and Me (which I didn't review separately, but is great)
- Linda Perry and Sara Gilbert's Deer Sounds (my review here)
I love that transgender and gender nonconforming kids and their peers today have not only a range of books, but also great music that reflects who they are. Seeing oneself in various media is affirming and strengthening.
