Unmarried parents: good, bad or neither?

As a society editor for a small town newspaper I typeset birth announcements and more and more I am finding myself typing in two last names -- which means the couples are not married.

Without being judgemental or questioning their choices, I sometimes wonder if these parents will be together throughout this child's life without the commitment of marriage between those parents.

Of course, marriage doesn't guarantee a couple will stay together, but it does sometimes make a person stop and think before they separate from each other and end their relationship.

What do others think about this trend of not getting married before having a child? Do you agree? Disagree, or neither? Is it just the way of the world today?

Is it a loss of morals? Is it a sad trend, an OK trend, or not a big deal?

What do you think?
