I Yelled at a Stranger's Kid on Vacation

On the heels of Marcy's Diner owner Darla Neugebauer's outburst toward a toddler who had been crying for 40 minutes, I've been brought back to my own story of yelling at a stranger's child. However, when I went to link my story in a comment string, I was reminded that BlogHer editors took it upon themselves to replace the image of a child at a pool that I originally chose for my story. You see, I intentionally did not indicate the race of the child in my story. It was unimportant. However, I did choose a photo of a Caucasian child looking defiant in a pool--because the child in my story was in fact, Caucasian. When BlogHer decided to feature my story, they removed the image of the white child and replaced it with a photo of black children laughing and smiling at an pool.

This offends me for a few reasons. Why change the race of the children in the photo? Is it because I am black, so therefore I must have been yelling at other black children? Or is it because it is to be assumed that black were children misbehaving? Also, by using a photo of children smiling and at play, without reading my story it can be assumed that I irrationally yelled at children who were just having a good time. I did not.

When I asked the editors why they changed the image they simply said they try to choose images that reflect their entire readership when compiling their newsletter. Still, I took this as a microagression and long after this story was published it continued to bother me. Therefore, BlogHer no longer has the pleasure of enjoying my free labor of this (now) timely issue. If you want to read my story, you can find it on my blog.
