Ten Simple Steps to Take Better Photographs

Everyone loves beautiful photographs of their children. Too often, though, we have a vision of what we want but the result just doesn’t match up. Through my own experience and through looking at other photos of children that aren’t quite as good as they could be, I’ve learned a lot about what makes a good photo.

These are my top ten tips for taking beautiful photographs of children. I’ve illustrated my points with some photos. All of these were taken in one 45-minute photo session on the beach with my daughter.

1. Get down on the ground.

 

If you don’t heed any of my other advice, or even read any of the rest of this post, for the love of god, at least do this. Your subject is only a couple feet tall – you need to make yourself this short as well. In the photos on the left below, I’m standing up. In the photos on the right, I’m literally laying on the ground.

A photograph should capture the personality of your subject. If you stand upright and take the picture, you’re getting an image of what you see when you look at your child. If you get down on the ground, you get an image of what your child actually is. (This tip works for animals and really almost anything else as well.)
