Tantrums and Migraines

Yesterday was a bit of a rough day in the Governale household. Why you ask? Well, it seems that Sophia has reached the age where every answer is a firm “No” or my personal favorite “but Mommy…” This alone wouldn’t be so bad but when combined with her stubbornness (I blame this entirely on my husband!) the outcome is potentially explosive. Case in point was yesterday’s playdate with Sophia’s friend at her house. It all started well enough with the girls playing alone while my friend and I caught up. Then the bickering over toys started – sharing is definitely not a priority for four year olds especially when the object in question is pink. Anyway so far, so normal.

Then the Gruffalo puzzle incident arose. As you may recall, the Gruffalo is one of Sophia’s favorite books so she was really excited to finish the puzzle even if her friend was completely uninterested. Finally, we decided that before leaving, the 2 girls would do another round with the puzzle which, in retrospect, was a mistake on my part (a bit of parenting advice: ALWAYS leave when you’re ahead). The other girl made the unfortunate mistake, from Sophia’s perspective at least, to sit in the wrong spot (Ok, so this nascent obsessive compulsive behaviour probably comes from me!) and after a brief Mexican standoff came tears, screams and total loss of control – in that order. As a parent, no matter how used to tantrums you may be, it’s no fun having to deal with them in front of other people.  Back to the story – there was no escaping – I had to drag her out to the hallway while attempting to put on her sweater, coat, hat, gloves etc etc (another reason to hate winter!) as she simply just pulled everything back off. I’m not sure how I managed the exit (not gracefully obviously) but needless to say the aforementioned migraine ensued. The silver lining to this story? School has just started again after a very long 2+ week break.

Now, I can’t end this post on such a negative note because being the new year and all, I’m focusing on the positive. So, I’ve attached the cutest photo of Sophia I could find which never fails to make me smile! She is my little angel after all – most of the time :)
