Sneak Peek into Home School Life ~Intro

5 years ago

Many want to know about home school out of shear curiosity or they are researching how to home school for their own family.  I love to see the logistics of how other homeschoolers get it done myself so I'm showing sneak peeks throughout our school year.

"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever!"   2 Peter 3:18  {our school verse}

February 2013 at Grace Academy
God is good. That pretty much sums it up.  Homeschooling is such a blessing!

My middle school student's work load has been a little intense at times this year but she is doing a tremendous job.   The school days are stretching longer lately because the assignments are just more time consuming.   We also take several breaks during the day because it makes my beautiful learner much more efficient and happier.

Anatomy & Physiology will wear you out.....

This year, these are the the main categories:

  • Bible
  • P.E.
  • Math
  • Latin
  • Science
  • Fine Arts
  • Geography/Research
  • Language Arts/English/Reading

What's so wonderful is that we use a biblical based curriculum, My Father's World, that combines the best of Charlotte Mason's ideas and Classical Education with a Biblical worldview, an international focus.
The company's tag line:

Raising Up Generations of Families Who See the World Through God's Eyes and Live According to That Knowledge.

How cool is that?!

We keep our librarians very busy ;)

 The "Core" or "Unit Study"
This is what the homeschool community calls it when a curriculum combines Bible, Geography, Social Studies, Readers, Read Aloud, Research, and Science as a 'unit' on the same topic.  This is how the company describes our specific course this year:

Take a trip around the world with Exploring Countries and Cultures and explore diverse countries while learning geography and being challenged by true stories of missionaries.

For two to ten weeks, we have focused on each continent and its countries.  Right now, we are in the middle of a ten week study of Asia.  For two weeks, we studied Saudi Arabia in-depth.  For two more weeks, we studied India in-depth.  You get the idea.

SO. very. COOL.

I must say that one of my favorite parts of our school day is the missionary/biography books that I read to her.  These books have planted seeds in my daughter (and me) that have changed her forever.

List of Missionary Read Alouds:
{I encourage you to read at least one of these with your family}

Cameron Townsend: Good News in Every Language ~missionary to North America
 Nate Saint On a Wing and a Prayer ~missionary to South America
George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol's Orphans ~missionary to Europe
David Livingstone: Africa's Trailblazer ~missionary to Africa
Amy Carmichael: Rescuer of Precious Gems ~missionary to India
Gladys Aylward: The Adventure of a Lifetime ~missionary to China

There is so much more to share.  This does not even skim the surface of the REST of the fun we have each week~virtual school, more science, Latin and so on.  But that is for another day and another post.  :)

What other questions to you have about {our} home school?  Leave in the comments.
