Sharing a Love of Reading With My Boys

I have always loved the words that Caroline Kennedy wrote in the introduction to The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: “…[I]f you love something, your children will want to love it too. As parents, we have a chance to help our children go beyond us, and to start them off on a lifelong voyage of discovery and self-discovery.”

When I first read these words, I wasn’t a mother yet, but I desperately wanted to be. I think these words impressed me so much because even then, I knew that if I were to become a mother one day, there was a “something” very dear to me that I wanted to share my children: a love of reading.

I love to read. I always have. And so does my father and my husband. I started reading to my boys when they were about six months old, and so far, they also seem to be bookworms. Reading with them is one of my greatest joys. Lately, my littlest one (he turned one last week) will select a book, clamber into my lap and point at the book as if to say, “Ok, I’m ready! Read to me now!” And I always do.

My oldest one loves to read too. When we pull into the library parking lot, he yells out “The library!” with such excitement that you’d think we were at Disneyland. I don’t know how long that enthusiasm will last for all things literary, but I’m enjoying it while I can.

As Caroline Kennedy went on to say in her introduction, “… [T]he power of ideas, and the ability to express them, is the greatest power we have.” I believe she’s right. I hope that my children continue to love to read for entertainment, but I hope that they also grow to understand that reading and writing can have a powerful, positive impact on their lives and the lives of those around them.

What is that special “something” that you love that you are able to share with your children, or that you want to share with your children one day?
