It feels to me like holistic living is a deep and slippery slope. One day your buying all organic, investigating labels, hunting out GMO's (genetically modified organism "foods"). You want to feed yourself and your family the best you can. Then your inspecting your non-stick pots and pans with a sudden sense of panic. Debating switching them to copper or something more eco friendly. Your drinking filtered water. but is your water clean enough? Perhaps a new whole house reverse osmosis filtering system might be in order. Since hey you do use water to brush your teeth and to shower. right? and your skin IS the bodies largest organ. Wait. is that bleach really the best for cleaning? Eco friendly cleaning products it is! What. They want how much? DIY eco friendly cleaning products it is!

And that is just off the top of my head a list of subjects I was exposed to in just one year as a member of the Holistic Mom's Network. Mind you I am currently not a member since there is no chapter where we live and lord knows I do not have the time to start one. But what is this all about? Just the latest holistic area of living I am trying out. No poo.
No. Poo. as in no shampoo. Clever right!
Since my hair is currently short I figured what better time than now to go for it. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that that no poo is exactly how it sounds. You no longer use or should I say rely on comercial shampoos or conditioners of any kind.
I had read about the horror stories of Exxon Valdez like oil spills in women's hair over the course of a month while the body and root adjust to not being constantly stripped by cleansing herbal products. Frankly I wasn't ready to give up my daily lather, rinse, repeat.
So I'm not really sure how it happened that I just stopped using shampoo and conditioner. Having read all about it a few years ago and quickly brushing the idea aside it recently made another appearance within my current mommy group. This time I would say I was much more open to the idea. and then I got too busy. Botanical extracts and cuticle smoothers became much too time consuming to sustain. Before I knew it, it had been weeks since I used anything other than water on my hair. and then when it started to get oily. Rather than lather up. I thought it was the perfect time to read up on how to no poo.
I discovered that the secret lies in baking soda and apple cider vinegar.
When my hair gets oily now I "shampoo" or "no poo" with 1 tablespoon water to 1 cup baking soda. Followed up with a conditioning treatment of 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar to 1 cup water (lemon and essential oils can also be added if you like a perfumed coif). What blew me away was how soft, light and clean my hair felt after no pooing and blow drying. Consider me sold.
Or actually not sold for that matter. What I really love about this actually working is that I will no longer be a slave to expensive mass produced products to sustain my lovely locks. The amount of chemicals I have just eliminated from my daily routine makes me absolutely giddy with holism. Every time I can take a step towards limiting my need to consume from companies who are utterly destroying this planet. I am a happy hippy. Rather than worry about which conglomerate tests on animals and which one outsources to China. I kick them out of my home completely. and the best part... my hair feels just as awesome without them! Thanks no poo. and thanks to all of the mom's out there sharing their experiences and creating converts like me. Now what to try next?...
