For me birth is a mystical, transformational, and spiritual event. The day I became a mother (to me that is the day I knew I was pregnant), marked a HUGE psychological shift in my way of thinking. Suddenly my spiritual journey towards a better me/world became TOP priority. This is what solidified my path leading to birth activism and becoming a doula. Doula's are more then just a birth aid, they are a “mirror” that reflects the power all woman carry within them. This power involves birth yes, but in its essence I feel it is about an untapped power that holds the potential for revolution and a new way of thinking. I truly believe that world peace begins at birth, and is fostered through the mothering process. Birth and motherhood is the battleground of women, when we are allowed to birth/mother from our primal cores we blossom into healers in our own right.
Taping into that inner knowledge allows women to in turn teach love, patience, and tolerance to our offspring, who in turn spread the message to the world. Doula's help a mother go deep within and find this place, and I think the mother helps the Doula go there too! It is a beautiful symbiotic relationship of love and power.
Nature is our universal mother, and we can learn so much from her. Since I have taken the first steps on this path, I find I am becoming more drawn to holistic living as a whole. I cannot find that place of power within myself, that will help other women, if my body is toxic and separate from the divine creatrix. I find I am drinking more water, eating more whole foods, spending time in nature, honouring my cycle, and doing lots of gardening with my daughter... teaching her to honor the cycle of life.
Doulas, and indeed all birth workers, embody the Goddess that resides within us all. We honour womens bodies and wisdom, and foster a sense of self-esteem and empowerment in the birthing woman. In order to do this we to must connect to that holy place within OURSELVES FIRST, and it is for this reason I truly believe this is my most political act to date.
