At My House, the Holidays Don't End Until February

Dear Mouthy Housewives,

My stupid Christmas tree is taunting me. I know it's time for that dried up thing to come down but I just have no motivation this time of year. Without fail, I always become that weird house that doesn't take their decorations down until the end of February. How can I avoid that this year?

Signed,

Prancer the Procrastinator

Dear P.P.,

The first thing to keep in mind is that there is always a bigger procrastinator out there. How do I know? Because I once got a Christmas card in March. IN MARCH. So be proud that you are even thinking of taking those decorations down and it's still early January.

As with any challenging task, it's important to have a mantra that will bring you calmness and serenity as you plow through the arduous tasks. Your mantra is delegation. Look around you. Do you have 4 foot people running around at home? Don't think of them as children. They are Santa's little helpers and they have been specially delivered to help you with your holiday clean-up.

Now, of course, my kids scoffed when I suggested that we put on some delightful Kris Kringle music and enjoy the festive tradition of putting away the decorations, removing the lights, dragging the tree out the front door and vacuuming up the endless pine needles. But once I explained they could eat their weight in Jelly Belly candy canes once they helped me complete these tasks, they were eager little elves.

Also, you are probably getting overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Do one thing every day and I promise it will be done before Groundhog Day. So get started. Pack up one box of outdoor lights today and then reward yourself with your favorite show.  "The Bachelor, Season 16" is waiting. Or maybe "60 Minutes" if that's more your thing.

Good luck,

Kelcey, TMH
