Maya Angelou Made This White Girl Sing

3 years ago

"Write," she told her classroom, "Write copiously." Once her words silenced, Maya Angelou became a voice for us all.

The power and poetry of Maya's verse hit a place hard in my soul. A tattered and well-read copy of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings followed me, a fixture on the shelves and bed tables through my life's journey. I read it to think. I read it wonder. I read it to cry. I read it to know.

The prose of Maya Angelou sang in a gripping harmony with other writers such as Twain and Harper Lee. The story of the oppressed relates to us all. Women, race, class, and special needs children, to name a few, grew wings of empowerment with the simplicity, beauty, truth, and joy of her words.

My son struggles to speak. Silenced by physics and genetics, he belongs to a group of birds that struggle to take flight. How long did we wait for ramps in sidewalks? How often do we still view the disabled as lesser than us? How often do we not listen? Voices like hers are rare songbirds that give enlightment to the struggles faced by those who suffer - and we have all suffered.

Read her verse and cry a tear for the flash that will light up your soul.

I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore,
When he beats his bars and would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings –
I know why the caged bird sings.

Here her speak ; you will be changed for a moment, possibly for ever. This amazing woman carved out a path for our us to follow. We'd be wise to learn from her gift.

Place her books on your daughter's shelves. Download the books from Kindle; send links on Facebook; Snapshot; Twitter; and wherever else you roam. She must live in us for generations to come. Together, we shall then sing.
