A Love Letter to My Son on His Fourth Birthday
Oh Boy! My Boy!
To say that you changed my life would be the understatement of the century. We were so afraid we might lose you. Terrified, in fact. Then there you were. Perfect, strong, amazing. My heart grew three sizes the second I heard you cry.
I can’t believe you are four! First and foremost, I want you to know how I am thankful for you. So thankful. I can’t even believe it. Really, I can’t. You are so smart, you are hilarious, and at times just plain exasperating. And with this birthday, you’re a kid. <sigh> A kid. Not a baby anymore. You left babyhood behind somewhere between three and four, right before my eyes.
Your personality has grown and grown. You are so charming that kids twice your age want to hang with you. But who would you rather hang with? Tilly. You are an amazing big brother. Loving, most of the time. Protective, most of the time. Best friends, all of the time.
I am so proud of the person that you are becoming. Sweet, loving, honest and loyal. I pray every day that life’s trials never take those attributes away from you.
During your three and a half week hospital stay after you were born, I came to the hospital every day and held your tiny body for hours on end. The nurses would often have the radio playing quietly, and at the time the Jason Mraz song “I’m yours” was popular.
This isn’t a song that I would typically love, to this day however, I can’t listen to it without tears springing to my eyes and goose bumps rising up on my arms. Particularly this part:
“So I won’t hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait, I’m sure
There’s no need to complicate, our time is short
This is our fate, I’m yours.”
And you know what? It’s true. I am yours. I will always be.
I love you. Happy Birthday.
