This winter has been severe. The number of cancelled school days has been unprecedented in recent years.
Snow days cause working mothers to struggle to quickly obtain childcare. Snow days cause the stay at home mother to lose her routine (fitness, housekeeping, cooking, laundry, email, etc.) and generally cause the house to be covered in play-doh, stuffed animals, and dirty laundry.
Snow days can also cause significant social isolation. Icy roads and dangerous conditions make it difficult to leave the house. If there is one thing that consistently worsens depression and anxiety, it is social isolation. Without the distraction of outside people, places and things, we tend to over-examine our problems and worry about their outcomes.
If you are a mother, you must work harder than ever this winter to stay socially connected with others. Whether it’s trips to the gym (my favorite remedy), playgroups, nights out with friends, or a walk around the block, you must fight the cabin fever of winter in order to manage depression and anxiety.
Allegedly, it’ll be Spring before we know it.
