According to Wikipedia, guilt is when a person believes (accurately or not) that she has violated a moral standard, and bears significant responsibility for that violation. It can lead to feelings of inferiority, inadequacy, hopelessness, and martyrdom.
Women often feel guilty because we can't do it all. We tend to want to be the best Mom that we can, succeed professionally, be in terrific shape, and do everything we can for everyone else. The term I like to use when referring to myself is a "Recovering Perfectionist".
Sometimes I feel guilty whenever I want to do something for myself. My husband works hard and has the two boys to take care of on his days off. I hate to spend any of my free time away from my sons, even if it is for just a little while. It's not that my hubby does anything to make me feel badly when I want to do something; it's something I put on myself.
In the long run, I know it is best for me to do things for myself once in a while. It makes me a better wife and mother. If I go out to dinner with some girlfriends for a couple of hours, it's really not going to affect my family that much but it is enough of an escape for me to come back re-energized and refreshed.
It is important for my sons to see me as a person. Someone who has friends, interests, and likes, not just as their Mommy.
What do you feel guilty about? Post it in the comment section. If you are feeling guilty about something, chances are another woman is too.
