I'm a bargain hunter.
There. I said it.
I love the clearance aisle. I'll veer my car off to the shoulder of the road if I spot a garage sale sign. So, imagine my surprise and glee when I heard they put a Goodwill Outlet near our house. Yes, you heard right. I said OUTLET. Goodwill is a thrift store to begin with who's prices are slashed. But an outlet? That must mean things are cheaper! I did a little research on their website which said that all merchandise is sold BY THE POUND.
Somebody fan me...
My aunt and I checked out the store a few years ago and have been back numerous time since then. It's nothing like I thought it would be. There are large, blue, rolling bins that are waist high and about 8 feet long. When someone makes a donation of used items to Goodwill, some of it gets dumped into these bins before it goes to the regular Goodwill stores. No one cleans them up. No one sorts them. There are good things there and I've managed to find many bargains. But there's a lot of junk, too. Not everyone donates nice stuff.
It's glorified dumpster diving.
It's not for the faint of heart but it is an adventure where you can find some good stuff once in a while. It's best if you wear gloves and maybe get a tetanus shot afterward (Not really... :-D). Three years ago, I found a dresser there for $4.99. (Larger items are not sold by the pound.) I love to refinish old furniture and this was my next project! A little black paint and some new drawer pulls and - ta da - I have a nice piece for my dining room!
What's your best bargain find?
