Sharing Books with your Littlest Ones

It is never too early to start reading to your child and I believe babies & books are meant to go together. Reading to your child from when they are little (newborn +) not only gives your child a head start in developing the much needed literacy skills for school, it also a wonderful way to bond, snuggle and share time together.

There are a wide variety of books to choose from so it can become a daunting task to know where to begin-

  •  The sound of your voice is what's important to a new baby, so choose books that you enjoy reading aloud.
  •  For ages older than 3 mths, look for books that have high contrast images (black and white), bright bold and simple illustrations and very simple/short text. Cloth books and bathtub books are also great for this age.
  •  6 mths and older, sensory books are well loved at this age-books that have pages that make sound, and have opportunities for touch & feel with a variety of textures.
  •  1 yr+, books with lots of repetition, rhyming and peek-a-boo flaps.

When your child is mobile on their own, don't be discouraged if they don't "sit" for a book. Read pages one or two at time and then take a break or read aloud while they are on the move.

Here are a few favourite board books for sharing:

Peek A Moo Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in A Ball Ten Tiny Toes Baby Goes Beep Cluck and Moo Baby Cakes In My Nest Wiggle Giggle Train
