This one is at the top of my favorites list. What a great way to start off the year, reminding kids that life is about the journey. Sometimes that life is full of ups and downs, ins and outs. This story can be revisited through out the year to remind our kids (and maybe ourselves), that it's about finding balance.
Follow Pete, the world's most chill cat, through his first day at school. No matter where he finds himself, he's got his groovy shoes and everything is going to be alllllright. We love Pete the Cat and all his adventures, this one is great for back to school.
Scaredy Squirrel is a little nervous and always is weighing his options when it comes to life. Sometimes making a new friend is worth facing all the scary stuff in life. This is great story for an anxious kid, it makes light of the situations by being a little over the top, just like Scaredy.
The classic Berenstain Bears are a fixture in our library trips and at home. This is another great story to put the worried first timers at easy. At first Sister bear is wary while Brother bear is excitedly pulling her behind him. After a few days Brother bear is missing Summer and Sister bear is dragging him to school.
The days of different names being unusual are far behind us, now that it's rare to find a class without a unique moniker. But kids sometimes find reasons to make new students feel unaccepted. For Chrysanthemum, she never thought much of her beautiful name until her first day at school. This story is a great reminder about acceptance for all soon-to-be new students.
If you've read one of these mouse stories, you'll probably have to read a few more. If you're lucky, it wont give your little one any ideas about prolonging our already drawn out days. These adorable stories are always entertaining and a great way to start your year.
To find the creativity in all us it has to begin somewhere. In this story it starts with just a dot. While this one is not specifically about the first day, it is about nurturing our creative sides with positivity and self discovery. The story promotes encouragement and embracing our own creative nature.
Pie has recently discovered Arthur's Adventures and I'm thrilled. It has always been one of my favorites from when I was a kid. This story is a great way to star the year. Take a look into the school day of all your favorite characters from this classic series. It's even great for the little ones staying behind while their bigger siblings are starting on their education journey.
We love Amelia and her literal nature that is always causing those around her to reevaluate their choice of words. We also love taking a look into Amelia's life as a quirky and silly child. If you're an Amelia fan, this book is a great back to school story for your child.
How can there be homework on the first day? How can Splat choose just one of his favorite Summer adventures to choose with his class on the first day?! Splat the Cat is one of our favorite series, there are so many fun and silly Splat stories, so this was a great read on the first few days back to school.
Another great series, another great story for the kids with a little anxiety about their first day. We were gifted a Pout-Pout story way back when Pie was very small, so we loved checking out this one on our first day. All the Pout-Pout stories deal a bit with facing our fears and overcoming them with a little support from those around us.
The next few are vintage, retro, old school or whatever you'd like to call them. They're actually mine from when I was a kid, Grandma let us raid her library when we visited. I was sure to grab my favorites. This one is a great story for kids who are learning to tie their shoes. Something we're still working on here.
Surprisingly, this sweet story is from 1964, it was one of my very favorites as a kid. It was awesome to be able to share it with Pie too. The adorable illustrations and sweet story is still just as cute and fun as when I was a kid and great for those starting kindergarten this year.
Another classic from my childhood and the library of Grandma, this cute story follows Amanda on her first day. She's worried and a little sad, there are tears shed. However, by the next day she's ready to go back and face the day on her own.
As always, we look forward to sharing more of our favorites with you and hearing about your and your child's favorite stories too. We're always looking for more great readers! Share with us your favorite back to school books to read with your child. What are some of your child'd favorites? Are you sharing some from your own childhood? Do you have any other back to school books to share?
