Connect the Dots, La la la la la

My children spend a lot of time with their pencils and crayons. Quite a bit first thing in the morning, mid-day as the yard heats up, and before bed as they unwind.

Recently my almost-five-year-old has been working on her letters. Little by little.

I try not to guide my childrens’ interests too much, letting them discover their own questions and answers. So, with writing, my oldest is just now getting interested. And as she learns to write, she also occasionally struggles.

“How do you make an “N” again, Mom? I can’t remember.” “That’s not right!” Yes, frustration is common. And making mistakes is dreadful to her. I know where she gets it, but it can be painful to watch a little one be so unhappy with themselves over a crooked “R,” by golly.

So lately I’ve taken to making dot-writing for the girls. And, although it’s as simple as could be, it occurred to me that I could share it here. Yes, it’s also kind of fun.

And it takes just a few moments longer than writing the actual words. You just write each letter a little larger as little mini-lines or dots.

Our favorite is surprising the girls with fun statements like “good job” and “happy day.” They get so excited to find out what they’ve just written!

So, anyone else use this method with their children in learning writing? What other methods are people using out there?

P.S. Anyone else get my Pee Wee Herman reference in the header? :)
