One of the very first things I encountered upon my arrival at BlogHer was a post about whether or now to trust online dating sites. Many here in the community have experience with such sites, likely with varying opinions and degrees of success.
I can't say I have ever used one, although my boyfriend and soon-to-be fiance (we're looking at rings now) and I essentially met over the internet. Technically, we had met once or twice while we were in high school, but we never spoke beyond a simply introduction.
We didn't meet through an online dating site either. In fact, the magic matchmaker for us was of all places, Facebook. Facebook suggested him as a friend one day, and while he didn't remember me at all and I don't remember when or how many times or even if I ever actually met him in high school, I did remember that he was really cute then and going by his picture still was some 14 years later.I added him as a friend. He accepted, and sent me a message basically asking who I was and if we had ever actually met in person. He was polite about it, explaining that he spent a lot of time online (he builds websites) and has a large fan base for one of his profiles or something. Point being, he wasn't sure if he knew me from in-person on online.
I was so embarrassed that he didn't remember me I almost didn't reply. I did though, and we started chatting.
There seemed to be something different about our conversations and while we didn't say it at the time, both of us felt a connection. He messaged me on FB on day saying essentially that he only went on there every couple of weeks to update his business pages, and that if I wanted to continue our conversation to call or text him. He included his phone number in the message.
Long story short, I texted him, that led to follow-up texts, which led to phone calls, which eventually led to him asking me on a date --- on which I actually stood him up when I failed to wake up for a nap.
Luckily, he stayed in a town located about halfway between where I lived at the time and where his house is, and the next day he took me out on his boat on the Tchefuncte River, which is a beautiful an scenic river in southeast Louisiana. By the next morning, we were completely smitten with each other and remain that way to this day.
