Painted on Faces - a poem

painted on faces

why do we paint on faces?

bright masks of laughter
to hide our inner self

revealing only the surface

masking the sorrow and the tears

the masks, some as simple as a smile
portray to the world a strength
we do not feel

others, an intricate balance of emotions
hidden, just beneath the surface

turning ourselves into pretty portraits
for others to admire

when the portrait we see
is far from pretty

at times tarnished and ragged

for whom do we paint on the faces?
