How Well Do You Understand Yourself?

In the last few days I’ve had some really cool stuff happen in my life.  I’ve finished a project I’ve been working on for weeks.  I’ve gotten some very good news about big money coming my way.  I’ve made plans for some epic summer adventures. We’ve had weather that heaven would envy, and I’ve had a lot of time to enjoy it outside.  It’s been boatloads of awesome stuff coming my way, and…

I feel unsettled and  uncertain.  It should be party central up in here, but I’m unsteady, and I’m not sure why, to be honest, that’s not all that unusual, just ask my husband.  I don’t always understand my own self.  I could blame my lack of self awareness on the stars, or my period, but I’m not sure there’s anything really going wrong.

It gives me a chance to explore what’s not quite obvious.  It’s an opportunity to pull back the curtain and see my soul from the best seat in the house, front and center, as the observer, not the experiencer.  It gives me a chance to go deeper into a relationship with myself, the way I crave depth and intimacy in relationships with other people I love.

It’s carved on the Temple of Apollo, and it’s become the seed for a lot of psycho-spiritual self-help babble, “Know Thyself”.  And most people think they do, and most people are dead wrong.

It’s almost impossible to fully see yourself.  It really is like a fish being unaware of the water it swims in.  We don’t see our own biases.  We don’t notice our own perceptions.  Most of the time we don’t even notice the voices in our own heads, although we hear every word.  We are unaware of our triggers and think we make sense, when there’s always a ghost in the machine pushing buttons.

I can’t ever really know myself because I am not ever the same.  I’m not fixed in a moving world.  I’m a part of that movement.  I can’t take what I know about myself for granted.   Looking into my own soul is a lot like putting my toe in a river, it’s never going to be the same water twice.

The best and most sacred thing you can do is stay in relationship with yourself.

When you’re curious about how you’re experiencing the mundane, you get a front row seat to watch the Divine do the physical world, and that’s a magical show.

You might want to read that last sentence again, because it’s true.

You are the Divine doing the physical, make no mistake about it.

Stay curious.

There’s always more going on than meets the eye and the big truth is almost always between the lines, in the unseen less than obvious places, waiting to be discovered.
