Lately my filter has been shut off.
Not a pool filter or the dryer’s lint filter. I am talking about that little voice in your head that tells you to STOP! DON’T SAY THAT!
Yes, THAT filter.
I noticed it the other day when I made a comment, just kind of slipped out, not really meant to sound so, well – snarky. It wasn’t until I saw the face of my friend, you know the look – kind of shocked like “oh my gosh! Did she just SAY that!”
And then I had to apologize.
Maybe it’s this over 40 thing. (shh!!)
Maybe it’s the threat of 40 mph winds up here in the North East.
Maybe it’s the thought of power outages and the fact that I have two sump pumps.
Two sump pumps that will shut down if my power goes out.
I don’t like to bail.
Bailing water makes me snarky.
I have had plenty of time to prepare, yet I haven’t.
Oh, yes, I am ready for the threat of Sandy –
I am not ready for the threat of a blank page and 50K words to (gulp) create.
I need character ideas. I need characters that aren’t so sweet and optimistic. I write what I know; and I am well, sweet and optimistic. I want to write a character that is seedy, somewhat loathsome, heading towards vile.
Just --- Snarky.
Maybe that’s why my filter has been shut off lately.
Are you feeling snarky lately? Then leave a comment J
