Remember in elementary school, getting your spelling list on Monday with the words for the week to learn by Friday? Twenty words, all in a neat column, with a lingering scent of mimeograph. Some with definitions and example sentences, though when we were old enough, it was up to us to use our words responsibly.
Is it pathetic that a new word list was a highlight of my week? The joy of a fresh batch of words counteracted the anxiety induced by the accompanying set of math problems (which I absolutely did not look forward to).
As I’ve become more confident in defining myself as a writer, I’ve been paying closer attention to the words that fly in and out of my days. I listen more intently, and hook into one that sneaks in to a conversation or a story. I examine it for a moment, then write it down on scrap of paper to ponder later. In the end, there’s not really a story (except for this one), but there’s a stack of cards and a mighty fine list of words that might take me someplace, someday. Then again, these words are a story in themselves.
These are the words that showed up for me this week. Where are your words taking you?
