When Life Gives You Lemons, Trade Them in for Red Grapefruit

2010 has been a tough year. Ongoing high unemployment in the U.S., troubled economies in Europe, and WikiLeaks disturbing the balance of political power around the world. Right now, the world seems to be getting a lot of lemons.  And we're all familiar with the old adage, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.  The problem is, I don't like lemonade! It's too sweet. Real life isn't all bad, but it isn't all sweet, either. The good news is that as this year ends, red grapefruit are in peak season!

A fresh red grapefruit has a taste that initially startles the salivary glands with its tartness then reveals its hidden sweetness. It's an honest sweetness that doesn't mask the subtle citrusy tartness -- it's flavors are balanced and incredibly satisfying. You can't ignore the intense juiciness and red color either, reminding us to live our lives with passion. So, as we say goodbye to a tough 2010 and welcome the promise of a new year, lets trade our lemons in for bags of fresh Florida red grapefruit and embrace life's tartness and sweetness with the affirmation to live our lives with purpose. Lets live intentional lives, not sugar-coated, superficial ones.

Tips for enjoying fresh red grapefruit

  • Chill your "red jewels" in the refrigerator.
  • The proper technique for eating a grapefruit is to halve the fruit along its equator and place each half in a bowl.
  • With the fruit-side facing up, cut vertically all along the circumference where the fruit meets the pith.
  • Next, section with a knife along the "ribs" of each half to loosen the triangle-shaped fruit sections.
  • Scoop the sections out with a teaspoon or a grapefruit spoon and savor life.
