When in Doubt, Ask a Question

The average person asks 250 questions a day. Okay, I just made up that fact, but seriously, you can see how it could be true. Questions are the most basic way of admitting what we don't know (but wish we did) as well as showing interest in another person. When readers ask us questions on our comment section, it tells the writer that they're trying to get a better understanding of the ideas presented in the post. And when we ask questions of our readers, what we're doing is opening up a conversation.

Questions are also the perfect way to connect with readers when you can't think of anything to write.

People do it in numerous ways -- sometimes they solicit questions from readers; letting readers know that they're willing to answer any question the reader has been wondering about. Of course, be careful about offering this up if your life isn't an open book.

Other times, they ask the reader a question -- sometimes explaining why they are asking by providing a brief story, and other times simply launching into a question in order to collect a lot of opinions.

Other ideas:

  • Play an enormous game of "Would You Rather" with your readers.
  • Provide readers with four questions. Not only do you get their answer, but it can be revealing to see which question they choose to focus on.
  • Create a poll inside a post, gathering opinions on a single situation.

What was the best question you ever asked on your blog? Which question generated the most discussion?
