Two Beer Geeks Tour The Mid-West Craft Beer Scene.

I wrote about our first day in Michigan last week on my personal blog. I had the intention of breaking these posts up by day but that was too ambitious. We have gone to too many breweries and too many bars at this point. Tomorrow we fly out of Chicago and head home. Since my Detroit post we have gone to three states and visited over 20 breweries. My liver is tired and we are both homesick but we are still having a great time.

Founders and Three Floyds were definite brewery highlights. We picked up case of Zombie Dust and Founders Breakfast Stout which we will send home tomorrow. Shhhh... Of all the towns we have stopped in I would definitely say that Traverse City and Ann Arbor are my favorites.

In Ann Arbor we enjoyed a flight from Jolly Pumpkin and one of their famous pies. The town was really cute and definitely felt like a college town. Hipsters on bikes, independent coffee shops and book stores. I wish we were able to spend more time there but we had to head to Grand Rapids, Marshall, Battle Creek, and more....

Battle Creek was home to Arcadia Brewing and also the Kellogg company... not to mention the cheapest breakfast we got the entire trip. Two full meals of eggs, sausage & gravy, and coffee for only $8.

Battle Creek was a fantastic town. The first time I heard of Battle Creek was in the movie "The Road to Wellville" which was a comedy about the Battle Creek Sanitarium. I loved that movie when I was a teenager and now I was here. The town was sleepy while we were there but you could tell that its a great small town. Living in South Florida means we miss out on the weather changes of fall. Our trees don't change color and there is no real feeling of fall in our area. We definitely got to see that this year.

After our stop at Arcadia in Battle Creek we visited Founders, Dark Horse, Bell's Brewery Vivant, Hop Cat, and eventually heading north to Shorts.

Because of Chris's fantastic job we were able to get a private brewery tour at Bell's.

The facility was beautiful and of course my favorite rooms were the hop cooler and the barrel room.

The drive up to Short's drive was beautiful. Michigan is a gorgeous state.

We tried 20 beers at Short's and then headed to Traverse. While in Traverse we stopped at Right Brain and enjoyed a flight of their beers.

We didn't have a lot of brewery stops planned for Traverse. We mostly wanted to see the town and break up the drive back down to New Holland and eventually to Indiana.

While in Traverse we checked out a few bars and coffee shops.

Beautiful, right?

After Traverse we started to make our way down towards New Holland. We didn't enjoy Holland for more than an hour or so, long enough to eat lunch and have a few beers. The town appeared to be similar to Ann Arbor, a nice college town.

The six hour drive between Traverse and our final destination of Munster, Indiana had three brewery stops planned but only New Holland worked out, everything else was closed.

We were looking forward to Three Floyd's so much. When we finally got there it was as if we had been pumped with a ton of espresso. We were ready to drink. The was Zombie Dust on tap, something I had been looking forward to.

We ended up drinking a few beers and then heading to the hotel to take a nap and we came back later that night for dinner and more beers. The group at Three Floyd's were fantastic. They welcomed us back and gave us a samples of anything we wanted, talked beer with us, and gave us a deck of Three Floyd's cards to show their appreciation. The staff at most of the bars that we have gone to were beer geeks just like us and were welcoming and were more than willing to share their local beer stops with us.

The next morning we packed up and headed to Chicago.

To be continued.....
