I went out with a target time in mind, a target pace and a plan. I wanted to stay nice and disciplined for the first half and see how I felt. I went out on pace at 10:45 and kept it right there until the turnaround. My sister was with me for all of that, but there wasn't a lot of chatting. I was focused! We hit the turnaround I decided to drop my pace down to around 10:00 and see how it felt. My sister was somewhere behind me and I don't know how far. In hindsight, that might have been a little early to drop the pace. I started to struggle sometime in mile 5 and dropped my pace back to around 10:45. I thought that was better than continuing to push and ending up walking. Once I hit the 6 mile mark, I gave it whatever kick I had left for the final .2. I am very pleased with the effort and the result. I would like to go sub-60:00 on a 10k. I will get there. For now, I am happy.
The event was an interesting mix. There was a half marathon that went off at 7am. Then a 5k at 8am and the 10k at 9am. Some (like my sister) were doing the double-header, the 5k and the 10k. It was also the USAT&F State Championships for the 5k and 10k.
The race was well organized. The course was clearly mark and it had things to look at. It wasn't boring. I remember at least two water stops, although I opted to pass them by. There was a great atmosphere at the start/finish line with vendors, tents, freebies, etc. And it was right in downtown Phoenix with lots of restaurants and things to do. We had no trouble finding parking close by.
My training plan said I was supposed to do 11 today. And since I am already short one 6-miler this week, I really wanted to get the 11 done. So after an afternoon of recovery and errands, I headed back out for the additional 5. I won't say it was easy, or felt good, but it got done. It is AMAZING how much I can motivate myself with the thought of brownies and beer.
