I have a photo album for just the summer of 2010. It was the best summer of my life….and I tear up when I think about it.
I had just moved back to Memphis after living in LA for 3 years and was finally reunited with my best friends. Some old, some new. We were fresh out of college with the rest of our lives to look forward to…the luxury of being single and carefree. Endless possibilities.
It is heartbreaking how much can change in 2 short years.
I think most of us knew the summer was enchanted. This couldn’t last forever…it was too much fun.
We had girls nights six nights a week and looking back I don’t know how I made it into work the next morning.
It was a summer of endless parties, photos and laughter…my favorite things. We did trivia every Thursday at Silly Goose and dinner every Tuesday at Bangkok Alley. Rooftop parties at the Peabody. Multiple trips to Vegas. And I can’t count the number of nights I walked (ok, stumbled a few times) out of Shadows at 4 in the morning.
It was a rare moment where it was about the girls and our friendships. Not the guys.
But then it went away just as quickly as it came. We parted ways. One moved to LA, one to Atlanta, another to D.C. And then the rest of us left in Memphis somehow fell apart.
I don’t talk to some of the girls anymore but others are now sisters instead of simply friends. And with my sisters from time to time we fondly say, “Remember when.”
Here are few of my favorite quotes that make me smile and think of that summer:
“It would be childish of us to deny that our lives weren’t changing. But for this night, none of use were going anywhere. That’s the thing about really good friends.” – Sex and the City
“I think about my best friendship — which the Marnie-Hannah friendship in Girls is based on — as like a great romance of my young life.” – Lena Dunham
“People change. They end up having nothing to say to each other, even if they were best friends the year before.” – Tape
“Everyone has a ‘best friend’ during each stage of their life. Only a lucky few have the same one.”
