Coaching involves helping a client rewrite an old story that is not working well now.
Consider this example:
A healthy 27 year old female is pregnant and puts on 40 pounds during her pregnancy. In the late stages of her pregnancy, she naturally learns to push her self up with her arms to get up from sitting or reclining positions. She uses arm rests or the bed beside her to push up from. She has the baby and returns to her previous exercise routine. 6 months after her baby is born, her stomach remains untoned while she feels frumpy and frustrated. She becomes discouraged and gives up eating healthy food. Soon she puts on an additional 20 pounds.
What isn't working here?
The behavior that served this female well during pregnancy; pushing herself up with her arms is not serving her as well now that she isn't pregnant. Her arms are toned while her stomach is not. She is not using her abdominal muscles much to aid in helping her stand or in other everyday movements. She is still protecting her stomach much as she did when she was pregnant. She needs to re-engage her stomach muscles in everday actions and use them in her fitness routine.
A balance of increased movment and healty eating will assist her in shedding unwanted pounds.
